The boy's name Wallace \wa-lla-ce\ is pronounced WAL-iss. It is of Old French origin, and its meaning is "Welshman". From "waleis". Originally a Scottish surname which refers to foreigners from the south. Popular as a given name in the 19th century. Sir William Wallace was a 13th-century Scottish patriot who struggled in vain against the English King Edward I. Poet Wallace Stevens; actor Wallace Beery.

Wallace has 8 variant forms: Wallach, Wallas, Wallie, Wallis, Wally, Walsh, Welch and Welsh.

Thanks Keith
There are French connections
I thought Wallace was a boys name but the Augustine bit confused me as i thought that was a female name.

Augustine is also a male name - St Augustine for example.

Augusta is a girl's name - I have one of those in my tree - she frequently shows as Augustus (boy's version).

Wallace is definitely a boy - I have one of them too. Often transcribed as Wallis so be relaxed about it.

I think their parents deliberately chose blessed awful names just so we could have the fun of tracking them down!!

Thanks Jill
I think you are right although i don't have to track them down,
My great grandad buired two babies of this name both of them only lived a few weeks.
I didn't want to send for certs as i know the details from parish records.
I think they were probably boys
Thanks again

Julie

Just to throw a spanner into the works, don't forget Wallis Simpson, wife of the abdicated King Edward VIII.

But I do agree Augustine sounds more male.

Definitely male.

Hi, just to add to the confusion : I would say Wallace (male) Augustine (female). In France they would usually use Augustin as the boys equivalent. As for St. Augustine, could it not be a female Saint ?

St. Augustine was one of the most famous (male) saints in history.
