Thanks for your help Jim Glitter and Irene :-).

Thanks Irene, I'm hoping to get to Liverpool record office this week so I will check that out. I used to do that all the time to find census records but since ancestry has come along, I've fallen into bad habit. Thanks for reminding me.

Thanks Jim for that :-) It could be a possibility. If that is the case, i wonder who the father would be as he died sometime before the 1851 census. I'll have to investigate that. Thanks.

Thanks Glitter. I wonder if that is my first convict. I'll have to do some digging. Technically, I'm descended from Caroline's sister but I'm exploring all leads in case it leads further back. If he is Caroline's son, fortunately the stint in gaol did him no harm as he became a chemist.

Thanks again everyone :-)

Irene

Ellen Jane Whitby's birth was registered March 1838 Liverpool 20 page 301. A copy of this birth certificate will have an address on it that may help you find the family 1841. I cannot see them in the census. Good luck Irene

Trying to find Caroline Whitby nee Caroline Waylett/Waylat Ellis on the 1841/1861 census. She was born in Cumberland but lists herself as born in Liverpool at the time of the 1851 census (her sister did the same - I presumed they moved there when they were little)

She married John Hunter Whitby in 1826 in Liverpool

Here are the christenings of some of her children:

1. JOHN HUNTER WHITBY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 03 NOV 1828 Saint Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
2. WILLIAM JOSEPH WHITBY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 04 JUL 1831 Saint Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
3. SARAH ANN WHITBY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 16 DEC 1834 Saint Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
4. ROBERT WAYLET WHITBY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 31 OCT 1826 Saint Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
5. ELLEN JANE WHITBY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 20 FEB 1838 Saint Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England

I think either one of these may be her death in 1861 as her parents were from London and her son John went to work there with a relative in 1851.

Deaths Sep 1861 (>99%)
Whitby Caroline Waylat Hackney 1b 200
Deaths Dec 1861 (>99%)
Whitby Caroline Walat Hackney 1b 213

Any help would be appreciated.
