Hi Irene - in case it helps ...you could try the 'South Australian Genealogical Society' (on-line) -they MAY be able to help -they have lots of records ..sometimes charge $5 - but well worth a try. ...The South Australian State Library has an 'Ask Us' service (on-line) they have lots of records too -(free) .. Hopefully you may learn from someone when she (Sophie) went missing! Valerie (WA)

In NSW, they did not keep lists of passengers departing. Don't know about South Australia, you could ask the Library of South Australia, they have an "Ask the Librarian" service.

The newspapers did list some departing passengers, depending on their celebrity, I guess. You would need an approx date.

They may not have married until 1883, but in the 1881 census you will find her and Samuel and their three children living in Willesden Middlesex.

She must have arrived before 1872, as Samuel W Hartley was registered in Dec quarter of 1873.

Samuel Hartley married Sophia Colledge born in Adelaide 1850 in Pancras, London, England 1883. I just wondered if there were passenger lists available of people travelling to England from Australia so I could find out when she arrived in England - if she came alone or why she came. Any help would be much appreciated. Irene

Irene,
Provide some information such as the name of your ancestor the person she married, what state she was born in ie; NSW,Vic.
If you give us this info we may have a fighting chance of helping you.
Cheers
