There is an interesting post on the "Success" thread thanking the "Genes Team" for their help.

Do people think they are paying GR via the fee for the look-ups?!!

Tracey

If you contacted me in that way I would have no objection whatsoever. But folk can be odd.

Good thread, Alun. :-))

A few months ago, another much-respected member, Reg, put up a really good thread along similar lines, but unfortunately a couple of members took exception to it (although there was nothing wrong with it!).

As a constructive thought, Reg's initial posting and yours, respectively, would be ideal one after the other. Don't know what Reg would think - Reg, are you there? lol

I C&P'd Reg's thread for my own private use; if you don't mind, Alun, I'd like to do the same with your first posting. :-))

What i find worse is when someone sends me a message saying simply "Please open your tree"
No mention of any connection at all. It feels a little abrupt and rude to me.

Alun I think you are talking about people who request information via "Hotmatches" as apposed to the boards.

I've found that if I look at the email from GR that notifies me that I have a message waiting, it gives me the year of birth of the person in question.

Elizabeth, I totally agree!

There is an on going discussion on this subject currently on the General Board

"ARE WE" (being taken advantage of!!)

It would help if GR issued some guidance-though whether people would read them is a debatable point!!

TribalPages gives some very good guidelines re asking for help-the bit I like best is:-

"our helpers are all volunteers,so be kind to them"!!

I do agree. Often after members have provided lots of census information they answer oh yes I have all that I wanted her parents names or something similar.
If they gave the information they already had it would save a lot of time.
The thing that annoys me most is when they ask a question, you provided the answer and they never seem to come back to their thread again so you never know if they have seen the reply.
So many people give their time without any thanks.

I find that a lot of people are requesting information about individuals without providing all the information that they have on that individual.

It would help, if you supply as much info as you can to enable your source to investigate. Recently, I had a request for information on John Mills and no other information was given. Looking at my tree, I found that I have 9 John Mills and it would have taken a fair bit of time to type the information I have on each John Mills, short of giving access to my tree..

Please provide:

1) Middle names or initials (if known)
2) Date of Birth
3) Birth location
4) Parents names (if known)

Hopefully, your request may receive an answer that you were looking for.
