I have one of these as well!
In the 1st Q 1861 Thomas Davy married Elizabeth Kimbrey Westminster RD

In the 1st Q 1864 they marry again Whitechapel RD

In the 1871 census he is a soldier at the Tower of London

He was about 10 years older than Elizabeth and I wondered if he was not free to marry the first time!!

Thanks everybody for your ideas. I like the one about losing 1st cert. and having to produce it to get Army benefits. Also he may not have had permission to marry the 1st time. Father's details same on both certs. Witnesses at 1st. wedding in Canterbury are his father, brother and either her mother or sister. Married by Assistant Curate. "nd wedding in Reg Office states still bachelor/spinster, witnesses Curtis/Lowford mean nothing to me-yet.#Thanks once again

Not sure about rules then but I do know of men in the Army in 1970s who had to ask their C.O. for permission to marry.
Perhaps they just went ahead and married the first time but hadn't got army approval, which they saught before marrying in Hampshire.

Hi
my brother married here in Ireland in registry office even though R.C. then married in Church in wifes town in Catholic Church in New Zealand about 12 years ago they live there.
Cannot get married twice in Church twice but could have had a blessing in one Church and marraige in other.

You see this a lot for soldiers. They had to produce a marriage certficate so the wife could be entitled to accomodation and other army benefits. Perhaps they lost the first cert.

Prehaps the church is not accepted in the romany culture ...

Or prehaps the church was of one religion and that wasnt accepted
Friends of mine had two marriages for religious reason ....cost her dad a packet!!

Hi, does anyone know why my Gt Grandparents would have been married 4.7.1907 in his home church, Canterbury, Kent then again 24.8.1908 at her home Registry office in Sth Stoneham, Hants? He was a soldier and she came from a romany family that had settled in the Southampton area in mid 1800's. I have both marriage certs. Any ideas?
