If you're going to be short of time, you can pre-order before you go - you might have to be quick, though1- I'm not sure of the latest time the day before you can do it. If you order original docs at Kew (You can only order 3 at a time), you might have a wait of about 30 mins before they are supplied, but you could always spend the time looking at microfilm or microfiche, whilst you wait! Depends what you want for WW2. They have War Diaries and Operations Records Books and Army/Navy/RAF lists, but no service records.

Hi there,

I'm off to the National Archives in Kew tomorrow for the first time, and just wondered if anyone had any hints or tips for researching up there at all, please?

I am trying to research the 19th century and WW1 military history of three of my ancestors and have got about as much information as I can from the National Archives website. I have my ADM and WO references for the records concerned ready to hand and am keen to find out more about their lives.

I know that the older records should be easily available, but am I right in thinking that they will not be able to help too much with WW2 records?

I spoke to someone at the NA last week to see if there was anything specific I needed to take with me, or anything I might need to preorder but, to be honest, she was less than helpful. I'm keen to hear from anyone who might be able to give me some pointers, please!

Thanks
