Mick is quite correct in that there is no official register of Deed Pools.

However, they can be enrolled, which does provide a public record, but in practice, only about 1 in 200 ever are.

Deed Polls that have been enrolled at the Royal Courts of Justice in London remain there for about five years. After which they can be found at the National Archives.

Tanya

Just a tip as I'm off for lunch now. If you post a new request for help - on say the Records Office board - you are more likely to get a response. Click on Records Office on the menue to the left, at the top you will see New Subject click on that and away you go.

Good luck.

Hello,
I`m new here having only joined a few days ago, on the subject of deed poll name changes my g.grandfather always said his name was changed by deed poll, whether by himself or his father i`m not sure. His name was John Smith at some point the surname was Titcombe. He married in 1903 an Elizabeth Hook, but says his fathers name was also John Smith(deceased) I have the marriage cert. Would anyone be able to help me as I`m very stuck now. Thankyou in advance.

Depends on when you are talking about. You dont need to publicise the fact you have changed your name - just tell anyone who needs to know. I added my mothers surname to my name a few years back because Im last in the line - my son also has it as a middle name now so that at least it should continue a few more generations. I just did a deed online and had two professional friends witness it for me.

In the past only those with the money to go through solicitors/courts changed their name by deed poll - you could try Times online.
