i have my dads name and date of birth and i think the right regiment he was in during the war

does anyone know if i can get his papers without his army number

If you are filling in the Certificate of Kinship to apply for his records you need service number and/or date of birth so you should be ok.

Hi Chris have you tried nationalarchives.gov.uk thats what i used and they are only £3.50 a copy.

It depends which war he was in, WWI records are on Ancestry or the National Archives, WWII you have to send off for and they cost £30.

Sent cheque 1st May for my father's records - received them today, despite a letter dated 14th May saying they would take 4-5 months.

Bit disappointing really Heather, but thats the way it goes.
A few things I didn't understand really - but it looks as if although he served right through the war he didn't actually do anything!!

There is a comment on the records: Special List issued - not yet returned. Not sure what that means

Reckon dad must have been a bit of a Walter Mitty character as looks as if the stories we heard were not true. :-(
