Even today, inquests are normally held only where the death is unexpected or where there is cause to suspect that the death was due to unnatural causes, Doctors and Officers of the Court (police officers, solicitors, barristers, judges) have the right to request an inquest, based upon reasonable grounds. |

Chris, look a long way ahead for the marriage. Ive found marriages decades after kids were born - in one case I know it was because the first husband was still alive and shacked up with a housekeeper. They must have heard about his death and then got married though in their 60s! |

No, it was normal to remarry. But maybe the other man wasn't free? |

He was probably showing no signs of ill health before his death so a post mortem would have been needed to find the reason for his death. Perhaps there was some doubt as to what had caused the heart disease and an inquest was decided upon to ensure that there was no evidence of foul play. |

Hi Everyone,Have received a death cert today for who i think is my gg grandmothers first husband. He died in 1869 age 23 ,cause of death "Disease of the heart" Unfortunately the informant was the coroner of shrewsbury not a family member as i had hoped.I was curious why a inquest would have been held as i thought this was only the case if death was due to an accident. Any thoughts?Would i need to see a copy of the inquest to find out more to proove if i have the right chap.? |
