Hi Jill, thanks for that. Hadn't thought of that...although i'm sure my mum has his records and have got him in lots of far flung and exotic places. I wonder if they had reserves back then? He certainly travelled round with them tho, thats how he ended up in Walmer and then Chatham (after originally hailing from Birmingham) near to where we are now, another Kentish tribe! Thanks again, i'll look into it .

Hi All,
Just wondered if there are any navy experts out there, who may be able to help me with a question......An ancestor was in the Royal Marines Light Infantry during this time and consistently puts his occupation as 'locksmith' on marriage and birth certificates whilst still serving ans is described on census returns as a 'marine'. What specific role would a locksmith have on a naval ship? We wondered if he served on convict/transportation ships but after a bit
of research he appears to have been a bit late for that! Any Ideas?
