^ Yes, Selena, hat is my Great Grandad and his two entries! My Granddad had no idea about the Partridge name and I don't think G Grandad ever did either. We always said it was some Scottish Walker chap rolling into Devon and knocking up Great Gran!

It was always said that it was his Dad who was the bigamist and we thought maybe he disappeared initially as he may have been sentenced. Great Gran was only 21 when they married so I doubt she was already married, and there's no record of her marrying prior to that.

I will try and get the certificate and see what it says, I figure Partridge and Mary had a fling and when she got pregnant he thought he'd better marry her and hoped no-one would realise he was already married!

If the marriage was found to be bigamous, it is likely that you will not be able to order a certificate even though it is in the GRO list.

That is what my friend found when she ordered one.
You may be able to find it in a filmed parish register if you know the church.

Marriage certificates were / are standard foms and the information then was the same as required now.

Sorry if I'm being thick but was it Mr Partridge you think was already married? Or do you think Mary was already married?

The Marriage cert should show you if they were spinster, bachelor or widowed etc. Should show you their ages and their fathers name.

Does that help?

Hi all,

Silly question, but what exactly do older marriage certificates show? I am trying to track down information on my GG Grandfather who married my GG Gran bigamously (we think) in 1907.

They married in 1st q 1907 and by June the marriage must have been voided as she uses her maiden name on my G Granddad's birth certificate and he was registered under 2 surnames.

We don' know a lot about my GG Gran because we think she may have been orphaned. She was in 1891 and 1901 census living as a domestic servant with a family so I have ordered her birth certificate to find out more. This was the easy part as we know from G Granddad's birth certificate that she was Mary Wall Walker and she was easy to find.

Her "husband" however was a Thomas John Partridge and there were a few born in Devon in the late 1800s even with the middle name so I'm not certain which one he is (or if he was even from Devon) so I was wondering, ho much would the marriage certificate be able to tell me? Is it worth trying? I found the record on Free BMD, but I don't wan to shell out if it won't give me enough to go on.

Also...if the marriage WAS bigamous, would I still be able to get the certificate?
