hi all, thank you so much for your help,

Ivy, this is definately my family, I have Kathleens birth cert, it doesnt show any maiden name for her mother annie, father is william lavis, occupation Builder.

Thank you linda
for possible birth cert for louisa, will get this certificate and see what it contains, still need to find older sister Florence's birth cert.

Thank you Kathyrn B not sure if they did marry as Mary Ann died a Campbell.

I have 1871 census of a Ann & Florence in london but it shows Mary ann age as 26 should be nearer 31 - us women hey! - and that she was born in middlesex and not wiltshire, Florence as aged 1 which is right but still cannot find a birth for Florence to check out the details,

many thanks again will let you know how it goes when i get louisa's certificate

One possible explanation for a surname as a given name is that the parents were not married, the child was registered with the mother's surname, and the father's surname is the middle name. That was the case for my great-aunt.

It also was not unusual for people to make up fathers for the occasion when they married, if their parents were not married and they did not know their fathers, or the father's surname did not match theirs. Sometimes the name was a grandfather, sometimes it was an amalgam of the mother's surname and the father's given name.

If that were the case here, and Campbell was Mary Ann (Annie)'s birth surname, this is an interesting William Lavis -- "Lavers" on Louisa's birth cert could be a misinterpretation of Lavis, the name given on Catherine's marriage cert.

Hi Jim,

I think I was lucky to stumble across it - nothing else really jumps out.

Tina,

Your best chance is probably going to be through Kathleen's birth certificate (and that of Louisa which Linda has found).

If Kathleen's birth cert names William Lavis as the father, what does it say for his occupation? In 1871 there are only about 16 or so likely individuals in the London area.

What does it say for Kathleen's mother's maiden name? Is it Campbell, or, as Linda asks, could that be her name from a previous marriage? If so, you may be able to find the marriage, possibly giving the name of Kathleen's Tisbury grandfather?

hi, I am searching for my gg grandmother Mary Ann Campbell b 1840 d 1927 as census shows in Tisbury, Wiltshire but alas i do not seem to be able to find her birth or her 2 eldest daughters Florence b 1870 or Louisa b 1872 both i believe Kilburn, the youngest daughter kathleen/catherine is my g grandmother. I have her birth cert. which shows her father as william lavis although her marriage cert shows him as william campbell ( deceased) which is the same for louisa marrigae cert. I do not as yet have marriage cert for florence. No maiden name for mother is on kathleen b cert. Does anyone have any idea where i can look next, thank you
