Have any of you managed to trace back a generation under these circumstances?

My Greatx3 grandparents were married in 28/5/1833, however it's one of those records where all it mentions is:

John Morton, Painter, bachelor of Liverpool,
marries
Elizabeth Bird, Spinster of Liverpool

& then the witness names.

Any ideas?

If you have an idea of which parish they came from, you then need to search the parish records for baptisms for them both.

They should still be alive on the 1851 census which will tell you birthplaces and you can check the IGI for baptisms first.

Thanks Sam - that's them.

But the problem that they were both from Liverpool, doesn't really narrow it down which parish.

Previous experience has taught me that it could be one of hundreds of churches in the area - but thanks anyway

Marriages were normally in the bride's parish so it would be worth checking baptisms to see if there are any children called Bird being baptised there around 1805-1815.

There is this one on the IGI in Liverpool. Different parish but a possibility.
ELIZABETH BIRD

Christening:18 AUG 1813
Saint Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England

Father: CHARLES BIRD

Mother: MARGARET

But I note that neither of those names were passed on to the 1851 children so I'd be a bit suspicious of that one.

Looks like you need to try to see the original records

I cannot find them as a family in 1841, I can find a William with an "unrelated" group and Elizabeth Morton on her own, which might make sense if John was away from home.

Have you looked to see who the witnesses were and where they were in 1851 ? If they were relatives, finding THEM in 1851 and then 1841 might give some clues. Hopefully you might find a married sister or brother. Fathers and mothers were often witnesses at weddings too. Remember its highly possible either one or both parents were alive in their 60s in 1851.

Does the full parish record include their current address ? in 1833 it should include their fathers name and occupation. If you only have this entry from the IGI, you should try to get a look at the full record either from the local record office, or the LDS microfilm of the parish register.

Thanks for the ideas - I'll look up the witnesses later

DI - I've seen the original in Liverpool Records Office

All's it gives is what I mention in the first post - it seems that a few of Liverpool's parish from that time give very detalied info on things like that
