Hello all,

Doing some research for a friend I have come across an Ernest Hartley living perhaps in the Oldham/rochdale area. On his daughters birth certificate he is described as a sculptor/art master at a School of Art.

Does anyone know of an institution of this kind in the area, I appreciate this could be anywhere in Manchester

Regards

Hi,

I tried Marie's suggestion of Google Books (and searched the words art, oldham, school), which came up with this extract from a 1929 book, "Who's Who in Art":

"... Oldham Hulme Grammar School; studied art at Oldham School of Art (Principal, WH
Helm, ARCA). Exhib.: RI, RSA, RSW, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts (mem.)"

- so there are a couple of possibilities mentioned there...

there was a school of art in Rochdale. I've found artists who studied there in the 1940's. The local history library is in Touchstone's gallery - an old building, perhaps where the art school was? I think there is a link from the rochdale.gov.uk website
