Hi all -
My apologies for not responding sooner but had to start preparing a meal for young grandchildren.
I forgot to mention that my grandfather said that his father was a Thomas Todd, deceased, when he married in 1899.
I have puzzled since whether he lied to the registrar to hide the fact that he was illegitimate.
In the 1881 census there is a Thomas Todd, head of household, with a son George (grandfather's name) but this George is 10 years old therefore being 2 years older than my putative grandfather.
Grandfather's age was consistent with the illegitimate George and followed through on his marriage and death certificates.

I am looking for a Barbara Todd – b.1848 – age 23 – Wandsworth – London Surrey (info. findmypast).

I think that she may be the mother of my grandfather who was born in 1873 in the Union Infirmary, Registration District Wandsworth to a Barbara Todd, father not named.
