Hi,

I have been trying to trace a very old friend of mine for a while. Decided to put her name into the quick search at the top of page. Found one hit, and I think it is the one I am looking for, but as yet no reply. I have found this with many others through hot matches. I keep getting e-mails saying we have found a match, when I look they are from people who I know, and some of these people are no longer members of GR, although three of them are relatives.

This can be very frustrating when your trying to tie things up. Can GR not do something about taking these people off.

Ann, with a banging head.

The trouble is you don't have to be a paying member to have your tree on Genes. Someone can just add their tree (from which you might get hot matches) and then never visit the site again.

I suppose it would be a shame to take off people who are no longer members, when finding them is important to someone who is a member. Probably part of the problem is that people change their e-mail addresses - not necessarily on purpose, but often when you go to a different 'server' I think it is called. I used to have an fslife email, and now have a different one and can't seem to access the old one at all. But there are going to be sites where my old one is still the 'active' one but I will never receive messages to it.

My main whinge with hot matches is that like many people many of my ancestors have 'unknown' parents. So I get given a hot match to anyone else with an unknown parent or rellie. Also I keep getting given hot matches to my own children, who are already on my tree.......probably just me not using it properly, but it could be clearer.
Just don't get me started on the re-vamped Friends R. incomprehensible.
