If you go to:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/index-e.html
then follow the "search" link you can view his attestaion papers online (free).
You can follow "search help" to see how to order his service record.
Since he was quite likely to be in Canada in 1911, you can also follow the "Canadian Genealogy Centre" link, then "Census". From there, use the automated genealogy link to search the 1911 census - hits link to the original images, which are also online and free. The 1901 census and prairies-only-1906 census (and 1851-2) are similarly searchable, and the 1881 LDS transcriptions are also online (and free).
