Thanks, yes this is the right Alfred - finger (or brain) trouble with 1871 and 1851 I am afraid.
This Alfred in 1871 aged 19 is living with Uncle Henry Hugh Tipper - butcher - birthplace given as Cheltenham - but no idea why it says that! - in the family shop at 7 Spectacle Alley, which is one of the common themes that ties all the family together and confirms the relationships. Also which of the siblings witnessed each others weddings so I am confident on the links I have.
Mary b c1848 with Uncle Alfred Tipper (who was baptised on the same day 12/12/1816 as Mary's father John, so may have been twin) & Aunt Sarah in London in 1871.
In 1881 living at 7 Spectacle Alley(which in 1871 was Uncle Henry and Susannah Tipper's family address) with husband and 2 children.
John Henry can't find for sure 1871 but 1881 I pick him up again.
I am very confident of everything back to the Uxbridge Union House as have marr and birth certs but it is a mystery what happens to the parents!!!
Alfred was my husband' direct line back.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Glitter Babe - gosh, you are being busy for me.
The 3 children were John, Mary & Alfred b july 1851.
I had the 1851 complete with spelling errors as Mary Sophia was born in Stepney and of course the surname is TIPPER - but that is the last I have found.
Christine has put some interesting things forward but I let my ancestry subscription and lapse and took findmypast and thegenealogist instead and they are not nearly so easy to search!! In fact neither of them had the 1851 census record above that I could find!
Thanks again for your help

Hi Christine
( last reply was for Glitter baby - I wasn't expecting so much help so quickly!!)
Yes it is worth trying to find another marriage or some other records but I can't help feeling that John's family rescued the 3 children and took them in so wonder if there was some sort of crisis around the census time of 1861 and no time for any help to come.. The youngest boy's name (Alfred) is almost last on the census return as if he was one of the last counted!
I will try contacting the local records office to see if they can help.
Thanks for that idea.

Thanks for your response
Its a possibility although on 1851 census she is aged 25 (name wrongly transcribed as TEPPER) living Hillingden End. I have birth record for youngest son Alfred born July 1871 in Uxbridge, father was an inn keeper in Hillingden End.
As the children ended up in Uxbridge workhouse I don't know why mother might have died in Shoreditch in 1852 (assuming that is the record you have found) but I may have to buy that one to see - I have already bought 1 wrong one for Mary Tipper died Feb 1865 in Aldgate, Whitechapel.
Thanks for your help - I hate to be beaten but must admit to being stuck in a few p[laces now!!!

Sandra, children were not always put into the workhouse because they were orphans, If the parents couldn't afford to keep them they put them in, or if they moved away to work. I was doing a family history for a friend and found that a mother was in the work house with 3 of her children, by the next census she had remarried but the children were still in there. The local record office for the area might have records of the family and details of what happened to them, it's worth finding their email address. I have found quite a few very helpful and they will photocopy information if they have it, for a charge of course, but it's worth it if it would be along way to travel.

Could the death of Mary be listed as Sophia.

Just wondering about the one in 1852

Does any one know if or how I can find out why / when family members were in these work house type places?

I am particularly interested in Uxbridge c1861 as 3 Tipper sibling children were in the Union House but I can find no information at all on parents John & Mary Sophia Tipper.
Later the children are with uncles and aunts so assume the parents died but can't find anything.
Thanks Sandra
