How do you actually use IGI Batch Numbers?

I have found the birth of a Margaret Ann Kearney on 25 JUN 1877 Belfast, Antrim, Ireland. Father Nicholas Kearney and mother Margaret Kennedy. Batch number C006609

I think this is the sister of my Grandmother Mary Kearney who was born to these parents in 1878 and her sister Catherine Kearney born in 1880, again with these parents.

I just don't know how to use these Batch numbers properly, can anyone tell me what to do please?

Hi Betty

Click on the batch number

Then put in the surname of the family.

I sometimes add parents' names and sometimes leave those boxes blank - it depends how many results come up.

Either way you come up with a list of children baptised in that particular church for the period of years quoted next to the batch number.

Select the batch - then put in surname - you will get all those with the same surname

Or put in surname and give the name of the father then that will list all those that match

Hi Jill and GB,

I did that, just what you suggested and although it came up with a lot of Kearney births none of them had these parents, they had Kearney parents but not Nicholas and Margaret. How is that? I thought I did it wrong but have already done just as you suggested.

Try just Nicholas - in case he was married twice.

Just had a look - it looks like a submitted record and not an extracted one.

Off for a look for one of the siblings.

Hello Jill,

No Nicholas never married twice he died in Scotland and was still with the same wife Margaret Kennedy.

I did just go and try as you suggested Jill just put in father Nicholas name, no mothers name, still nothing except that one birth Margaret Ann Kearney on 25 JUN 1877 Belfast, Antim.

I can't find Mary or Catherine with parents Nicholas and Margaret. Found them with parents Thomas and Sarah ...

And the other records look as if they are submitted as well so I'm now a bit confused.

Hi Jill,

I got the birth of Mary Kearney and Catherine Kearney from someone who looked up the baptism record in a church in Antrim, thats how I have these two births.

I just found the other birth on IGI Family Search!!

I know they had more children, male and female.

Have you played around with the spelling of Kearney on the igi ???????
You might be surprised at the results

Hi daddymuzza,

Yes I have tried various spellings of Kearney/Carney,Carnie, etc. but nothing except what I have already found.

I know when they came to Liverpool, the spelling was Carney and also in Scotland when my grandmother married it was Carney.

This seems to be a speciality batch number. It has no source but appears to be all the births in Ireland for 1877.Or at least quite a few!

Thanks Jim,

Sorry I just saw your post, strange isn't it that all the births are 1877 for that batch number. Never mind onwards and upwards as they say!!

On a normal Batch for extracted records you can even bring up the entire batch by leaving the name empty. The results come up alphabetically so if you think a name may be spelled strangely you can hunt for all possible variants. The IGI will bring up variants but sometimes the mistranscription is so weird it helps to see the lot.

You can also just put a parent's name and see all baptisms for children with a parent of that name.
Though you do have to remember that sometimes there may be more than one person with that parent's name.

Each batch number refers to one parish register (or sometimes a small group of successive registers), and usually covers either births or marriages for one parish for a specific time period.

Using a batch number has two effects: firstly, it limits your results to that betch; secondly, it relaxes the rules about what the IGI search engine considers to be a valid search.

E.g., suppose I wanted to see Kearney births for 1877 +/- 10y - well you can't normally limit just a surname by time - the most you can normally limit is to Antrim, say. However, you can limit it like that with a batch number (but you'll only get results from that parish, or even with J/K batches, one sex in that parish). One might also note that one batch number might not cover that whole time range - there are almost no Scottish batch numbers covering both 1854 and 1855.

Another example - suppose you want to know all births where a Kearney was named as the mother - just entering Kearney as the mother's last name is allowed if there's a batch number - of course, most parishes in England didn't give the mother's maiden surname, but some did, as did most Scottish parishes. So say I wanted to check Dundee for 1868-1875 for births where the mother's name was Boo - the batch # is c112823 - 5 hits - the closest mother to Betty Boo is John Roney's wife, Isabella Bowes. If this was what I was after, then the nextstep would be to see if John Roney and Isabella Bowes had any other kids, outside this batch #, and to check for their marriage, and these should be searched for in the standard (batchless) way - even if you find a marriage with an OPR m batch #, then it's worth redoing without in case there are banns recorded elsewhere.

To my mind, batch #s are a search aid, either helping me zero in on some relevant results in a plethora of hits, or allowing me to search in more useful ways. I'ld always repeat the search without the batch numbers - the submitted entries are not valueless, and sometimes contain very useful info - OK, you need to treat it with more caution, but you might find spouse's parents, death and burial info, sibling info, etc, given on a submitted christening record.

Thanks Sue and mgnv,

Appreciate you help and your replies re batch numbers but somehow my Kearney/Carney family only have one birth listed, I can't understand why many of the children were born within a year or two of earch other!!

I am going to have to read your post several times in order to fully understand it but, I will get there in the end I am sure. Thanks for posting all the info it really will help me understand Family Search and their batch numers etc
