The medal rolls are on Ancestry and also on the National Archives site:

As far as I'm aware, all Army records with A surnames have been put onto Ancestry, so there won't be any more at Kew, assuming he was in the Army and not in one of the other services. The medal roll will be at Kew, but this will just give you his battalion. This can't be done online. You would need to go, or get someone to go for you. You need to get his medal card from Ancestry first, though.

Many Thanks for the suggestions. I have subscribed to Ancestry but as I'm in Australia the National Archives might be a little harder to contact in person. Can it be done online without it costing too much? I will try the medal roll as well.

Have you found him in the Medal Rolls list on Ancestry? That will give you his service number, which you can then use to search the service records.

A lot of the first world war records were burnt, so it is possible that his records have not survived.

I've tried with no success to find the war record of my Grandfather Harry Thomas Allen Born 1881. Address wiould have been in Sittingbourne, possibly George Street. He worked as a brickfield labourer. I do know he was shell shot in France, but survived eventually passing away in the 1960s. I had thought that his records may be lost or they haven't yet been transcribed.
I've had great success with my Turley Grandfather's records finding out some very useful medical history at the same time.
Would much appreciate any help anyone could give.
