Peter, I doubt if I could get broadband where I am, even if I could afford it. It costs 3 times as much as dial up.

Is there any chance you can move to broadband? That will eliminate dial up concerns altogether.

Sorry to be slow getting back. I am in NZ.

Jim, my setting says 'Never dial a connection' (I have just checked).

Keith, I have AVG free, although sometimes it seems to fail. I have just looked and there is no mention of a virus. When you say disconnect your modem when not online, do you mean unplug it from the power? I already hit the double monitor symbol down the bottom then when a window comes up I hit 'disconnect'.

It has done it only the once that I know.

Huia.

One thing to check
Tools
Internet options
Connections
Mine has selected "never dial a connection"
Not "dial whenever a network connection is not present"

Did you have any programs running and if so what were they?

Some require an internet connection and will attempt dial up automatically if there isn't one present

Huia, if it is dialling itself, it may be possible that you are infected with one of the "auto dialer" virus.
Have you scanned your computer lately with ad-aware or spybot? Also scanned with an anti virus?

A simple preventative is to disconnect your modem when not online, but this will not stop other virus communicating when online.

how and why my computer would decide to dial up the ISP all by itself when I am watching TV? Last night when I was watching TV I thought I heard it dial up but decided it must be something on the TV, however when I came to my computer I found it was connected to the internet, and I am sure I had disconnected before I went to watch TV.
These darn computers, why cant they learn to do the h*******k while we are watching TV, that would be useful.
