Hi Karen ,you are not alone I am a subscriber to Ancestry and needed to see the 1891 and 1881 census for my grandfather. on the 1881 census it kept giving me the wrong page and after reporting it they said I would have to wait until they did their maintainance check whenever that might be as I've been waiting 6 months

I have been using it for much of yesterday and today with no problems.

I use Firefox, and do not have the enhanced browser loaded, which is allegedly causing problems for some people.

Thanks for that little tip Margaret, never though of looking on the part which tells you about the census, often wondered if there were any parts missing and also, helps to know when the census was actually taken.

Very helpful, thanks again for the tip.

Karen.
When you go to a census scroll down to where it says " About the 1861 census".
Then for more information about this data "click here".
Click onto that and scroll down

It gives the piece numbers that have known problems. Pieces missing.
It then directs you to The National Archives online catalogue

I have a subscription to Ancestry which works fine for me but if I can't find some one on the their census I often go to findmypast's index and look it up on there -if I can find it there I know I just have to look harder and more creatively on Ancestry.
I can't really justify paying for a subscription to both although sometimes I buy some credits for findmypast.

I have both subscriptions and prefer FMP by far. The address search on each census is an absolute bonus plus varient name search as Alice has just mentioned.

The 1901 census is now available on FMP, although it's only partially completed. Counties are being added and it should be complete by the end of July.

Having access to additional BMD's, overseas, at sea etc is extremely helpful. Also Military records, National Burial Index and the list goes on.............

Hi

Findmypast is more expensive than Ancestry - they both have the BMD indexes but worth looking at both sites to compare what is available and deciding which is most useful to you.

I've put a post on Gen re the reply I've just had from them about the pages freezing.

Is it just me or is anyone else having problems with it again?

I've mailed them for the umteenth time about the site freezing - this time I've told them I want a partial refund for all the times I have been unable to view pages and that if it doesn't improve I will be subcribing to Findmypast instead. Do you think they will take any notice!! LOL
