Please can anyone tell me if the name Mally is male or female?

The name appears on an IGI birth so cant identify whether male or female.

all the rest in the family are daughters, just wondering if this one was to??

Sorry folks, I just answered my own question.

Just put Mally in ancestry and 557 turned up on 1851 census all appear to be female.

Wonder where it came from?

Have a care with Ancestry's offerings. Many of these could be mistranscriptions for Molly (i.e. females).

Another possibility, for male or female, is that they have taken a surname for their forename (for instance the mother's maiden name might be used for one of the children). There are quite a few with the surname Malley in Lancashire.

I knew a Mally, his real name was Malachy which is Irish.
