can anyone tell me how to get further back than 1804,i have traced my family back to ireland but i am stumped now.

Getting back to 1804 is good. It's rare to get back that far as the Catholic registers generally start 1820's-1860's, few if any significantly before. Some of the protestant registers go back to the 1660's but of course these were a minority in the land. I know few people with Irish Catholic ancestors who have managed to get back further than 1780's at very earliest.
