Hi all,
Need some advice here. Starting to look at husbands side of family. All in England or Ireland. What site is the 'best' site to use?
Ancestry, Find my past, The geneologist, or what. Any views? They all look much of a muchness
Thanks
Annie

You won't find many Irish records on any site unfortunately so unless the majority of his ancestors were from England, you may be wasting money.

I use Ancestry but it is probably a matter of personal preference.

Hi Sam,
I thought it would come down to that. I read of loads of people having problems with ancestry. I had a look at geneologist site and it looks ok too. I did so well on my scottish side which is / was difficult. Have to do other side now.

You could take out a 14 day free trial on Ancestry and see how you get along with it.

I've also seen that lots of people seem to be having problems with Ancestry. I use it at work (naughty!) and at home and can honestly say that I haven't experienced any problems.

Maybe follow Christine's advice and try to the free trial first, to see if you encounter any problems before you actually fork out any money.

I've used Ancestry for a number of years.......had a couple of 'blips' when they were upgrading the site, but no more than a couple of days at the most.

Check it out........see if it suits your needs........

Have just been doing a trawl through the full BMD images on Ancestry to find a relative of my wife.. No problems, apart from the fact that there were a lot of images missing.

In the period 1923-1926, no fewer than 4 quarters were missing. They are on The Genealogist site, and all 4 are crystal clear.

This is not the first instance I have had of missing images on Ancestry, so if you intend doing a lot of searching in the full BMD indexes this might be a point worth considering.

Major Bloodnock, the images will be there, just not indexed correcty, when there is an addition on the bottom of the page, Ancestry index on that so a lot of names could be missing.

To find missing quarters, try a name close to the one you are looking for then scroll backwards or forwards to find the correct name. Or check the page number on a visible quarter, click on the year on the link above, then selct the quarter and letter you want, then enter the page number and again scroll back or forward.

Thats very true Barry, sometimes the transcriptions and indexing are appalling, should be better.

Thanks, I am enjoying the sun, but too humid at present , only 37 C but high humidity so not pleasant working outside, as soon as you leave the air conditioning you start to pour!

Dear Annie it probably depends on how much money you have to spend.
I started with Genes Reunited (it's cheap)
I subscribed to Ancestry as it gave me a lot of good information about my english family roots (issues with transcriptions desrobed above not withstanding not that I have had many issues)
I then Subscribed to Findmypast.com for the immigration records
I live in Australia and thre out of four of my grandparents were born in England.
I have made a lot og good contacts with genes reunited and made contacts with many cousins who are all willing to assist.
I find the Census records on Ancesty.com good and the recent Australian Additions good.
Find my past has some recent additions with the census where in some you can search by address
and the national Burial index is great fro England, although I think it is a work in progress.
I have also foudn Tribal pages a good source of contacts.
Like with any research you need to use many sources and references.
I think the idea od the 14 day trial with Ancestry is a good one and see how you go.
The trying to find on Genes is also a good source (that is unless you name is Brown :-) )

I guess you need to know what sort of information you hope to get.

Hi all,
Sorry I have not replied sooner. I am a nurse and work nights at the moment. I must admit I am leaning towards Geneologist site. Nobody seems to have any prob with them. I might try the free trial first. It is just frustrating. I am waiting on a marriage cert that should at least give me the parents names so I can start the searches. I was even stuck with that as they were not married until their after second child. So I was looking in all the wrong years.lol
Hy poor hubby he did laugh

I found lots of info on genes about my family and a lot of people did help as they were a lot further along than me. So my scottish side is more or less sorted( apart from my mothers father side. McPherson in Scotland Pleeeease, with only a name to go on) I have even less to go on with my oh's side.
