What a lovely story, how pleased I am for you. Nothing so interesting from me, nearest is a chap I have contacted via Genes who has a strange way of recording his relatives such that he initially thought he was related to my back in the 1800s but we soon scotched that idea. However, we have been conversing privately for over a year, got on like a house on fire, swapped loads of info on our families, helped each other out with personal/work problems and are now DETERMINED to find a family connection between us.

That said, have found lots of living relatives in the area (admittedly a few times removed), we are planning a party!

Happy hunting

We have several links to another family over the space of time. Two of my Great Grandfathers sisters married two cousins from this family in 1871 and 1875 then I discovered that my cousin married into the family again in 1949.
Then after explaining this to another cousin she told me that she had grown up with/went to school with a yet another member of the same said faimily in the 1970's !!

Another ....I had some original documents passed down to me a year or so ago which belonged to my GG Grandfather. In 1896 he had two streets made and built houses on them. His business partner turned out to be the GG Grandfather of one of my sisters friends who she's known for years.

About 20 years ago a new neighbouring family moved in about 3 houses away from us. Their children were about the same age as ours so the kids played together and the mum and I would chat over teas and coffees.

We were talking about our families once and we realised her paternal grandmother had the same unusual surname as my great grandmother.

Chatting away we had family stories of the same pub in the family and a similar family legend. We couldn't fit the facts together though.

I then had a spell of researching regularly in our local Records Office and discovered that my friend and I shared a 2x great grandmother. Her great grandfather was the older half brother of my great grandmother so we are half third cousins. Her ancestor was illegitimate but later called himself by his stepfather's name.

We visited the village where the family came from and the local vicar let us see the original parish records.

Our kids loved the idea that they were cousins of a sort!

Brilliant story Megs ,although i think the correct title is 2nd cousin once removed (blood relative)

Megs Dicky Island Report 25 Jun 2008 01:46

I haven't been doing my tree long, and didn't even know what the tips board was until a few months ago. Now I can't wait to look at it every time I log on, reading all your different stories, worst death, stories from relatives that were totally untrue, tree bandits and name collectors.

Anyway back to thread subject.

Started researching my family about a year ago. Started off by talking to elderly relatives and visiting the local cemetery, the grave diggers their are wonderful, and have all the details of the buried on microfiche in their grubby little office, and if they're not too busy will do look ups for you and show where your relatives are buried. Found my G, GG and GGG grandfather and lots of their descendants, was delighted. Not long after, one of my husbands friends popped round, they've been friends since primary school and he only lives up the road. Anyway it wasn't long until my husband starts talking about me stalking cemeteries. His friend asked where I'd been, and said that his mum had been up there as she was researching her tree aswell. He also mentioned that the chap I saw at the cemetery was called Digger Dave and they used to be a bowling team together (not that its relevant to the story).
A couple of months later I was talking to my husbands friend, and asked how his mum was getting on with her tree, he started telling me a story about his G Grandfather and G Grandmother who lived together out of wedlock for over 40 years and didn't marry until a couple of years before they both died (they were in their 80's). I couldn't believe it, it was the same story I had been told only a couple of months before by my G Uncle ( whom by the way didn't know existed til I started going through the phone book). Turns out his mums maiden name is the same as mine, his grandad was my g grandads brother.
Now thanks to his mum I have pictures of my gg grandfather (1862) and my ggg grandfather (1839), and just to wind my husband up we call each other cous, which really hates.

Anyone else with a similar story?

Meg
