19th century official copy of Charles' birth certificate is loosely inserted at the rear of the diary.
Charles was born on the 11th June 1848 at Eaton, in the district of Mancroft, Norwich, Norfolk, to Anna Elizabeth Ewing, formerly Crickmay, the wife of John William Ewing, of Eaton, Nursery-man.

The diary runs from July 12th 1863 to April 29th 1864 with entries for most days.
Charles did much practice as an organist including practising at "the Cathedral organ, Norwich" and playing at Eaton Church. Inter alia, he mentions going to the "Nursery" and "Shop" these references suggesting that his father was still, as noted on his birth certificate, a nurseryman and was - on the evidence of the diary entries - fairly well-to-do; Aunt Ellen provides breakfast regularly; he goes ice-skating; has his hair cut on Boxing Day; plays whist; goes with Willie and others to be photographed; goes shopping; mentions Mary, Arthur and Catherine [siblings?] frequently; mentions the comings and goings of several other family friends and acquaintances and, occasionally, but without obvious enthusiasm, their daughters.
