Jill 2011 (aka Warrior Princess of Cilla!) Report 25 Jun 2008 17:40

I have what might be my gr gr grandfather George Wareham showing on a boat called the Greenock on the 1861 census. I'm not 100% sure this is him as he died of TB in Hertford on 10 May 1861 so it seems a bit unlikely that he'd be gadding about on a boat a month or so before. Plus, his occupation on his death cert was groom and every other mention of him shows him as a Railway porter, transport worker etc.

So, how do I find out where The Greenock is on the census night of 1861? There is nothing on the record or the image to help me and googling brings up lots of info on Greenock in Scotland.

Hoping someone can offer a bit of help/advice please.

Many thanks

Jill

Hi Maureen

I'm trying to find where The Greenock was on the census night.

If it was abroad somewhere then it's less likely that this George is my George who would have been ill by the census night.

If it's some sort of inland boat/coastal waters boat then it's possible that it is my George.

I'm sure on some census returns it tells you where the boat was - what port it was at - or what County it was in even - but I'm struggling with this one.

GB?

Jill cannot find out where the Greenock was on census night, it does not state it on the transcription.

Gravesend I think

1861 England Census > Misc Ships at Sea or Abroad > Vessels > District Greenock

Look at the ED sheet

Well spotted Keith - I'd missed that!

Now, how (without Greenock in Scotland muddying my waters) can I find out where it was in England?

I'm struggling with my George, it seems a bit odd him becoming a sailor. Although there is a possibility that he ran away to sea leaving his wife and 4 children behind. (Wife was a bit of a girl by what we've found so far!)

But - England is a lot closer than some far flung port so thanks for spotting that!

Have to nip off home via Tescos - hope someone can come up with an idea or two.

Many thanks Keith and Maureen.

Under the 1861 search box

Select Misc Ships At Sea OR Abroad and then Vessels

Scroll down and find Greenock and click on ED - image says form issued at Gravesend

Thank you everyone - I've managed that.

Can't read what the ship actually did ... but I will find that out some other way.

Many thanks
