Hello
Please can somebody advise me. I am now getting confused. I have started my family tree with the information I have prised out of my Mother and some bits that I can remember myself. I now need to look at records not really knowing whether they are relevant or not. Can anyone advise me of the best way to go about things before I just make a complete fantasy tree!
What is IGI and FreeBMD?
Thanks
Andrea

hello andrea
the igi is the international genealogincal index. you can find batism marriages and deaths on there aswell as the 1881 census for free.very good site when you get back to the 1800s .

the free bmd index is a ref for when you need to order births marraiges and deaths.you will nead the ref number form this to order any certs that you need from ww.gro.gov.

FreeBMD is the index of Birth, Marriages and Deaths. It isn't complete andcovers from 1827 to aroun 1920 at the moment.

The IGI is the International Geneological Index and is a collection of mainly baptisms and marriages covering the 1500's to around the misd 1800's. There are 2 types of entry - extracted ones are transcribed from the actual parish records whereas submitted ones are submitted by anyone researching their tree and not checked. For that reason, submitted ones are not always accurate. Find the IGI at www.familysearch.org

Illbump up the tips for newbies - you need to be prepared to spend some money on certificates to ensure you are following the right line otherwise it will be unproven and a waste of time.

Ill bump up the thread.

Its nudged up for you.

Basically you need solid info, not just family memories which are often proved incorrect. Get your grandparents marriage certs and work backwards from that information - once you have a person who would be on the 1901 census then you can use the census information backed up by certificates to ensure the correct line.

It's a good idea to read the thread right at the top of the Tips Board......that explains the IGI well.

I'll also bump up my suggested useful sites thread for you.

Have fun
Sue
