My f.i.l. was illegit, no father on his b cert but there is one named and an occupation given on his m cert. The name and occupation were given to 'save face' rather than admit he didnt know who his father was, that is why I suggested that your man might have been illegit.

Hi to all

Family members have told me he was born and then returned after his marriage broke down to scotland.

I have his marriage certificate registered in Birmingham, stating his father name and his age at time of marriage.

I have asked England, Wales & Scotland BMD, to search for a William Blair born for this time period to a father of Andrew Blair, they have found nothing.

I am considering applying for his WW2 records, will this have his DOB?

Either that or maybe his fathers name was different and he just used Andrew, i.e, it could be his middle name.

Thanks for all your thoughts.

What info leads you to think he was born in Scotland?

Where did he marry?

Have you considered the possibility that he was illegit and invented a father and occupation?

Hi Angi

The father's name could be wrong on marriage certificate,I have a few Scottish certs where it is.

This is the only birth for William Blair in Dumfries between 1907 - 1912 on Scotlandspeople

1908 BLAIR WILLIAM COOPER M LANGHOLM OR STAPLEGORTON /DUMFRIES 839/00 0032

How sure are you that he was born in Dumfries?

Thanks, but Scotland search a 5 year period covering the year you give them, i.e, I gave them 1910, they searched through from 1908-1912.

They found nothing. The same was searched by the England & Wales BMD, and they found nothing.

I am at a complete loss. I've only been doing my family tree since the new year, so not very experienced. I wondered if I had missed anything glaringly obvious.

Many thanks for your advise.

Hi Angi

Don't assume his dad is still alive. My mother gave her father's details on her marriage cert when she married aged 25. Her father had been dead for 21 years by then.

With the age. Assume that he had his birthday the day before the wedding and work out possible birth date from that, then assume that he had his birthday the day after the wedding and work out possible date from that. Do the same with any other info you have re his age at any given time. You might need to search a 3 year time span.

So if hte wedding was 6 June 1938 - he could have been born anytime between 7 Jun 1910 and 5 Jun 1912.

The GRO (England and Wales) will do a 3 year search - 18months each side of a given date. So maybe it would be worth considering approaching them again. If they've already searched for 2 years then try the other end of the 3 year period. Not sure if Scottish GRO do the same but it's worth asking.

Hi,

On his marriage certificate, (1938) it says he is 27, and his father was Andrew Blair, and gives Andrews occupation. I took it from this that his father, Andrew was still alive.

What was the date of his marriage and his given age at the time? You might need to broaden your search period.

Do you have any other records that mention his age at all?

Can anyone tell a website that will let me look at Scottish birth records for 1910 onwards.

I have been told that Scotlands poeple only let you look at birth records upto 1906.

I have tried to order a certificate for a William Blair born 1910/11 in dumfries? possibly, but they returned my money and said there wasn't a William Blair with a father of Andrew Blair born anywhere in scotland.
I then had the same happen for England & Wales.
I have his father name and possible year of birth from his marriage certificate.

Any help would be great!
