Was that her maiden name, ...or the name in which she married John?
Maybe she had been previously married?

The actual parish register entry might hold clues, ..eg. witness names

Sarah Payne`s maiden name is SMETZER
Sarah married Samuel Lucas Payne on 28 Aug 1802 at St Thomas, Southwark, Surrey( from IGI index)

I think Chrisa is right. Parish records often give the maiden name and Hatter is a good possibility.

What do the other entries on that page look like?

From the information googled, I took it to mean that the person was a hatter by trade so like Mrs Tibbetts would think he was a hatter.

>Google 'Hatter born'

I have but none the wiser. Although there are lots of references to hatter born I can't find a meaning for it.

Google 'Hatter born'.

I think its more of a case that the 'hatter' is the father's occupation, and 'born' is a space to write the date the child was born on (assuming the date there is the baptism date) but that this information wasn't filled in.

Perhaps the mother was a sufferer of Mad Hatters Disease.

Mad Hatter syndrome
Type: Term
Definitions:
1. gastrointestinal and central nervous system manifestations of chronic mercury poisoning, including stomatitis, diarrhea, ataxia, tremor, hyperreflexia, sensorineural impairment, and emotional instability; previously seen in workers in felt hat manufacturing who put mercury-containing material in their mouths to make it more pliable.

Could it be that one of thems occupation was a hatter who made hats?

Robyn

Robyn Report 29 Jun 2008 12:35

It is Samuel Lucas Payne and Sarah payne (Smetzer)

chrisa

chrisa Report 29 Jun 2008 12:30

Am I right in thinking Lucas is a middle name & Payne the surname?

If so could it mean that Sarah was born Hatter?
