Birth records - Help please

Could anyone tell me if there is a way of finding more details about a birth - ie mother's / father's name etc without sending for birth certificates. I am looking for my dad's half brothers with only rough idea of years of birth and have come up with a few options for each brother.

I realise a visit to the records office would be the easiest way but I live in Durham and I am researching my family from Kent so thats not really an option at the moment.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Thanks
Viv

No, you can't check parents names on a birth certificate without ordering it. A visit to the Records office won't help you as they don't hold any records other than the actual index which you can access online anyway.

You would have to order the certificates but you can give your dad's name for the father as a reference checking point. That way, if the father's name on the certificate is different, they won't send you the certificate and will refund £4 of the £7 cost, so at least it will only cost you £3 for the search.

Seeing as it is a Kent registration it would be better to use the local kent office.

Ref checks (if used) are free and if they can't issue a cert then they won't charge anything for searching,

No Cert= No Charge

service is usualy as quick (and often quicker) than the GRO and the price is the same.

You will need one of the following offices, which one depends on the place where the event took place, certs can be ordered from the registrars by phone, e-mail, post or online via the council websites.

Thanks for all the info

I've just spoken to Canterbury records and they are doing the search for me - no charge if they aren't what I am looking for.

Thanks again for the info

Just received the Birth cert and it turns out it is the right one - hoorah!! Unfortunately father's name shows just a strike through. but at least I have date of birth etc.

So thanks for the help :)
