Thanks for all the replies. I had to go off line last night and only just checked them this morning.
Ann - I didnt know about the archives at Kew, I will check it out. I think it is a coincidence with the names as he remarried a Jeanie McIntosh Cowie.
Glen - will check these out.
Jeanette - This is the death that I think may be correct but I dont know how to verify it further. I will check the marriage again. The RCE records have appeared since I first looked at it, thanks for that.
Sarah - Is Register House in Scotland? I will have a search for it and see what I can find.
Thanks for all your help

Hi Jill

The divorce record is on Scotlandspeople. If you open the marriage cert there is an entry in RCE which has the details.

I found one for my rellie in 1923

Jeanette

The RCE does not give reasons for divorce.but has date, place and Registrar's name. Maybe staff at GROS can help with how or where to obtain this

The 1885 marriage was in Perth, there are four possible deaths for the timeframe in Perth.

The re-marriage was in Glasgow and eight matching deaths for the area/time.

It was on the Kew National Archives site. I didn't know whether they also hold Scottish divorces,- just thought I'd check on the off chance- but thought it was a coincidence as his name was the same, and date about right. Yes, Eleanor would have been his wife. Perhaps just a man of the same name, then, or another marriage for him!

Thanks for the replies.
Ann
Thanks for the info. I have had a look at the National Archives of Scotland but was not sure how to get any further than the information page.
I dont think the reference you gave me is correct as his wife was Maggie Birrell. I presume in your reference Eleanor Stewart was the wife?
Do I need to join the site to get further information?
I cant visit them as I live in East Sussex.

There are records for a divorce at the National Archives.
Appellant James Reid Stewart,Respondent Eleanor Stewart. Co-respondent William Adam Kennedy. Date of the divorce was 1893.

If these are the right people you can get copies sent to you.

Enter the reference J77/528/16123, and click on Request this. They will then send you a quote for copying the papers.

Can anyone advise me how to find details of a divorce that took place in Scotland between 1885 and 1899?
I am trying to find the death certificate of one of my great aunts on my fathers side. She married James Reid Stewart in 1885 and he died in 1937. On his death certificate it shows that he divorced my g/aunt, Maggie Birrell, and he remarried in 1899. I would like to find out the details of the divorce as I think she may have died in an asylum and that might be why he divorced her.
Any help at all would be great
Thanks
Jill
