Glenda

waqs that on the actual census image or on the transcription???

If the latter, remember that transcribers have to write wht they see, they are not allowed to make guesses, or to try to find out correct spellings.

YOU can however have changes made. On ancestry, look for Comments and Corrections in the box to the left of your screen.

Another odd census entry. Just found 1901 entry where Romona Box should have been Pomona Coe.
I guess someone needed glasses!

Thank you Rebecca
Found likely Alice but no parents names shown.

Dear Glenda,

Not sure if an orphanage might also be a workhouse, but here's a very informative site on workhouses with links to local history centres that may still hold records.

I am in same situation. IS there any way to find out more about a servant or person in an orphanage?

Thank god they weren't recorded as "living relative"

Perhaps to hide their identities from prying eyes!

These were ordinary people in a fairly posh house. The servants had their whole names recorded, but the family were just one initial and surname.

people in prisons and workhouses and other institutes where often recorded using only their initials

Having just wasted a long time looking for a family in the 1891 census (lots of unusual names like Bertram and Roland) - when I eventually found them, the person doing the census must have decided they were far too big a household - so only their initials got recorded! Makes searching for them very difficult!
