Hi, I found a medal card at National Archives last week for OH's Great grandfather, does anyone know if any of the details on the card would help me find out more about him and his time in the merchant navy. the card reads as

Surname Murphy Cert 08010974
0r 812697
Dis A

Christian Names Henry Joseph RS2 NO 19508
Place of birth Dublin Year of birth 1862

Mercantile Marine Ribbon issued 22-9-19 to M.M.O
British Medal Ribbon issued 22-9-19 to M.M.O. Cardiff
Mercantile Marine Medal issued 23-5-21 to M.M.O of 10 Moira St
British Medal issued 23-5-21 to M.M.O Adamsdown
Clasps issued Cardiff

I spoke to the merchant navy record office in Cardiff and was told that this was quite rare find, I am hoping that another trip to the national archives in a few months time will yield a bit more infor especially if I have his marine service no.

Any help would be really appreciated

Thanks
Pam

I suggest you look at the relevant research guide on the National Archives website. This will tell you the sort of records they hold, and for which periods. It will also save time when you go there, as you'll know the references to search!
