Trying to find marriage

Usually not, but if both parties went along to register the birth, the father's name could then be recorded.

Ah thank you - I hadn't thought of that.

So, if the mother was unmarried, would the father's name be on the child's birth certificate?

Possible, cousin marriages are allowed. The more usual explanation where the child's surname is the same as the mother's maiden name is that the child took his mother's surname, possibly because she was unmarried.

Hello,

I have found a birth entry for a William F Hefferon b 1914 q3 Prescot and it states that the mother's maiden name was Hefferon.

So, am I right in thinking that I am looking for a marriage reference with 2 Hefferons?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Rachel
