Found this on Shropshire Archives website...

Research fee and payments

The fee, including VAT and postage, is £20 per hour. The fee for an additional half hour's work is £10. The fee will cover a detailed report of the search and its results, suggesting further lines of enquiry. A limited number of photocopies may be provided free of charge if that is judged to be the most economical way of presenting the results. Additional copying, photocopies, certified copies or photographs where appropriate can be supplied according to the standard scale of fees in Shropshire Archives.

Their website is here: http://www.shropshire.gov.uk/archives.nsf/open/71983720B579FD7280256C77003BF70B

You don't have to make an appointment as such but do usually need to book a fiche reader or a PC. And yes, you do need to go to the County Records Office for whichever county your ancestor was from.

You can usually ask the RO to do the research for you but they will charge in the region of £30 per hour, even if they don't find who you are looking for.

Much cheaper to wait and make a visit yourself. Try and wait until you have a few people to look for to make the visit more worthwhile. It is a bit pointless to go for one person, find them in 10 mins and then go home again!

I know what you mean about the carbon footprint, I've been to Records Offices in Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and really could do with going to Nottinghamshire and Bedfordshire. I'll have to wait a bit I think!

Thanx for that Sam, having never visited a records office, I presume you must have to make an appointment, and I take it the records office will be in that area your searching?
Do they offer a postal service?, in my case my carbon footprint could end up being huge!

The further back you get, the less records are available online. You will need to visit the Records Office that covers the area concerned to check the parish records but check before you go, some older records didn't survive.

Where else would you search for relatives in the mid to late 1700s if you can't find any trace of them in the IGI?
Example Hannah Pierce, Ford Shropshire 1763.

Any tips appreciated tracey
