Hi Margaret
In the 1851 he says he is 69 and Maria is 54, but then he is a Victualler.
John 15, Susannah 12, Thomas 10
As the other ages seem to match with the 1841 I thought it more likely that the 1851 ages were right.
Chris
(If that makes sense)

The ages here don't match the ones you have.
1841 census
Truxhale?, Newington, Kent
Thomas Spain, 55, ag bailiff
Maria, 45
William, 10
Mary, 8
John, 5
Susannah, 3
Thomas, 3 months
Maria Mumming?, 15, female servant
All born in county.

Actually with the rounding down of ages Thomas could have been 55-59 so born 1782-86, Maria was 45-49 so born 1792-96.

Thanks Christina & Cynthia.
I have seen that entry before but I am sure I have seen somewhere that after Elizabeth died Thomas went onto marry her sister and when I checked (at the time) they were still together and having children when my Thomas married Maria.
I am at the moment racking my brains (and googleing like mad) to find where I got that info from.
Thank you both
Chris

My Great, Great, Great Grandfather Thomas Spain married Maria Silver on 8 Oct 1829. Thomas was 51 and a widower when they married in a church in Newington-Next-Hythe, Kent and Maria was a spinster aged 33.
They went onto have 5 children from 1830-1841. William, Mary, John, Susannah & Thomas.
Is there anyway I can find who he was married to before.
And if he had a family with his first wife
I would be grateful for any help or pointers
Thanks
Chris
