Does anyone know if it is possible to obtain documents/transcripts from a trial in the 1950s.

I think your best bet is to check on the National Archives site for information.

Might be worth a look at the Times Online archive (200 years are free at the moment for an introductory period). There's often quite detailed articles on court cases in there.
