Hi Norma,

I have found a few of my ancestors staying with siblings, and depending on which census you look at, they can be shown as 'visitors' or 'brother-in-law' or 'nephew' or 'grandson' - the list goes on!

I have even found that 2 of my ancestors were staying in a school establishment - it turns out that it was a school for the blind.

Do you have access to the images Norma,

If so take a look at this one, there is no surname transcribed as heisat the bottom of the page and there is a small piece missing but it definitely starts with H and looks like a d further along.

I've saved the image and can email it if needed

Just had a thought - did William have any siblings? Its possible he was staying with one of these.

Hi Norma do you also think they may not be married in 1861?

There are a couple of "boarders" for William, born Lincolnshire around the right age.

Haven't found any possibles for Rachel yet - still looking

The 1871 census information you gave me was my William Hardy. I agree that it does not look like the name Rachel Ann on the census.

Rachel's parents were Thomas Parkin born about 1803 in Cottingham, East Yorkshire and Fanny ? born about 1807 in Beverley,East Yorkshire.

William's parents were Thomas Hardy born 1801 in Burton on Stather, Lincolnshire and Elizabeth,formerly Twidale, born 1801

What are the names of Rachel and William's parents please?

Missing relatives are William Hardy born 1839/40 at South Ferriby, Lincolnshire. 1851 he was at home with his parents in Cottingham, East Yorkshire.1871 he was with wife Rachel in Hessle, East Yorkshire and 4 children. He was a brickmaker.

Rachel Ann Parkin was born 1842 in Hull. 1851 she was at home with her parents, in Hull.

Neither of them were at home in 1861 with their parents.

You could post the names, birth year and place on here and see if someone can help.

If you give the details of where they were in 1851 and 71 that will make it easier for someone to search.

We may not have any luck either but it's worth a try.

Death, emigration, mistranscribed entries in the census, missing entries in the GRO index. Each is a reason for a missing rellie.

Missing census entries can often be found by refining the way you search for someone, missing entries in the GRO index are a bit more awkward, any records should be held at the local (to the event) register office and the GRO index but the fact that the index is compiled from millions of submitted records means there will always be missing records and errors.


Don't forget that freebmd isn't complete, the nearest to a full index is via the ancestry and findmypast sites. Also a married couple may not be under the same roof on census night, you might need two images at two addresses to get the full picture.


I have nudged a thread with a link to illustrated census searches, it might give you some ideas and techniques you might not be aware of.

What do members do when they cannot find a marriage and an entry on census?

Have scoured freebmd and census but have run out of ideas.

1861 they cannot be found yet are on all other census, 1841-1901.
This is the time I believe they were married so expect to see them together.
