Just wondered if anyone would know why a death in May 1997 would be registered a year later April 1998.

Thanks

Meg

A funeral can't take place until the death certificate is issued, so I'm not sure why that would be unless corrections were made later.

Post mortem needed? Autopsy? Possible murder or other suspicious cirumstanes? What does the death certificate say?

Like Margaret, I would suggest there was an inquest or suspicious circumstances.
I just looked up the registration of a death after a well known murder case.
The registration was over 15 months after the event.

Coroners will often issue a certificate allowing a funeral to take place prior to the inquest. The inquest will result in a cause of death being established and then a full death certificate can be issued after registration.

When our son died the coroner gave the go ahead for his funeral but all arrangements were between his department and the funeral directors and we were given a very simple death certificate
After the inquest was held a few months later the coroner gave us a note to take to the registrars office and that is when his death was registered and we obtained the death certificates

Thanks everyone, yes there was an inquest that didn't take place until the following year.
