ok Polye (with Colnbrook) are part of Slough which comes under Berkshire. The Golden Cross pub still exsists and is listed here... http://www.pub-explorer.com/berkshire/pub/goldencrosscolnbrook.htm
It might be worth contacting the brewery to see if they have any information ie when he left or any forwarding address for that time.

If it comes under Slough wouldn't it be Berkshire (or previously Bucks) ?

yes it exists

Poyle is a village and suburb in the unitary authority of Slough, in South East England. It is situated immediately west of the M25 motorway and 16.8 miles (27 km) west of Charing Cross in London.

I am trying to trace my father with a very common name but I do have some points of reference but I still can't find him.

His name is Jim (James) Butler and was the publican of The Golden Cross Pub in Polye Middlesex during 1968. Thats all the information i have about him.

Where do I look now?
