What information would I find on the Adopted Children Index?
I understand that only an adoptee can view the Adopted children register.
Thank you.

After the adoption order has been granted in the court the child is entered on the Adopted Children Register. I can take about 2-4 weeks for the entry to be appear on the Register.

Prior to 1969 the index to the ACR were dusty old books and you could search from the year of the adoption.

The child is entered in their adoptive names:
Surname
First names
Date of entry onto the register (not date of birth)
Number of entry
Volume number.

Adoptions post 1969 are on computer and it's presented in a different way and harder to search.

The index was until recently on view in the public viewing room at the Family Record Centre. However, the FRC has recently closed and everything is being moved to Kew.

It is not known yet whether the index will be on view in Kew or in what format. It has been mentioned that it all may be put on computer.

No-one can view the Adopted children Register as is under lock and key and few people have access to it... however, only the adoptee can apply for information off it.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Gerry

Hi BPC
I have tried many times to find your thread and failed. Is there any chance you can post the link?

Hi
Thanks BPC I found the thread. I was always led to believe that the index of the ACR was only held at the FRC.

I emailed Greater Manchester County Record Office and asked them and this is part of the reply:

***We do have a copy of the Adopted Childrens Register on microfiche. The public can view the index.

There are various formats of the index, some years of the index are alphabetical under the year of birth others under the year of adoption. The index will not help you find out a persons name before adoption nor if you know a birth name a persons adopted name.

I hope this is useful to you***

Hope this helps Ian too.

Cheers Gerry

Hi,
Could you tell me how far back the Adoption Register goes?
I am interested in one that possibly took place between 1918 and 1928
