Why would a couple who have children give them a different surname to their surname?
eg Man and Woman's name Meredith but all children called Greenway

Are you looking at a census entry?

Could be children from the womans first marriage?

Yes it's from a census but woman's name from first marriage was barnsley

Just a wild guess but could those children have been the offspring of a first wife of Benjamin? If he'd married their mother and she died then he might have been looking after them when he married again.

Worth checking to see of Benjamin was ever married to a Greenway.

And as Claire said, Rosanna (also noted down as Rosannah) Barnsley appears in the births index:

Rosanna Barnsley
Mar qtr 1852
Dudley reg district
vol 6c pg 105

Interesting - Rosanna is younger than she "should" be in 1861. (Assuming it is the same lot.)

1861
Benjamin Meredith Head Mar 35 Ag Lab b. Claverley
Ann Meredith Wife 38 Ag Lab Wife b. Codsall, Staffs
Ann Meredith Daur 13 Scholar b. Tettenhall
George Meredith Son 10 Scholar b. Tettenhall
Roseanna Meredith Daur 5 b. Tettenhall
Ann Meredith Mother 76 No Occupation b. Staffordsh Wolverhampton

Also interesting, Ann would appear to have been married before:

1851 address - Compton, Tettenhall
George Barnesley 32 Ag Lab b. Staffs Penn
Anne Barnesley 32 b. Tettenhall
William Barnesley 7 b. Tettenhall
Anne Barnesley 4 b. Tettenhall
George Barnesley 1 b. Tettenhall
