Hi Andrew

It can be done and I will tell you how in a minute, but for such a large place as Manchester with so many registration districts it would probably take you a fortnight to do. In this case I would make a note of the names of the near neighbours on the 1891 and try to find them on the 1901 then go up and down the street to try and find your family in case their name has been mistranscribed.

To do an address search.

1. Open Ancestry

2. Scroll down the page to where it says 1901 England and click on it

3. When that page opens, scroll down the page and click on the county you want

4. When that page opens click on the town or village you want.

5 When that page opens you will see a list of District numbers. Next to each one will say Description of Enumeration district. Click on that bit and you will see which streets are covered by that enumeration district.

6. When you find the street you want, just click on District 33 or whatever number the street comes under.

This sounds a lot more complicated than it really is, believe me. You will see though how it is so much easier to find a street in a small town or village rather than somewhere like Manchester.

Good luck with your research.

Dianne xx

You can address search any census from '51-1901 via ancestry, before the advent of the internet there was no indexed census that could be checked.

See the following link for details and illustrated guide of how to find the parish and description of the district, you then have to check the district image by image for the street.

Can someone explain to me how to do an address search.
Can't find my family Albert Noble born abt 1886 in Manchester on the 1901 and thought an address search of their previous address might help.

Thanks in advance Andrew
