Which war did he fight in?
Many WW1 service & pension records are available on Ancestry and for soldiers that died the basic details are on CWGC site.

If the next of kin are all dead maybe you could be eligible. You may have to send copies of their death certs and explain the relationship. It is worth a try perhaps?

Thank you. I can understand the need to have a safety net to ensure privacy and to make sure that no one living is going to be upset etc but when the direct NOKs have died, it's a shame that this information can't be released.
I'm sure like all records they will be available sometime, but I'd really like to get my hands on this info in my lifetime!

I recently filled in a form for the Coldstream Guards and on there you only had the permission thingie if it was 1921 or after...anything before that ...say 1871 in my case... I just had to fill in the solders details

I know that to access service records you need the permission of the Next of Kin, but what counts as next of kin AFTER so many years may have passed?
Example if you have a distant relative / "interest" that fought in the war, but all his immediate relatives are dead and it would be impossible to trace the outer circle of relatives, who may also be dead.
Where do you go from there ?
