Hi Gwyn

Its got to have been something like that that's happened somewhere along the line with the 1871 census. The image defnitely says Thomas. But Alice's fathers name was definitely James.
Her birth cert says James, her marriage cert says James. Her baptism says James. & she named her son, my grandfather James Middleton Lovely.
I just wish I could find a marriage for him & Mary Ann so I could trace his line further back.

Clutching straws here, ....
I wonder if Thomas was abbreviated to Thos( written with top of letter pointing to the left, with down stroke curled left too). and James to Jms. and somewhere along the way the script writing merged the 2 names in records.

A friend and I are chasing her lost relative, interestingly also in that area, and we too think that Thomas and James records are probably for the same person.

I'm thinking it must be something like that but I can't find any marriage for James/Thomas & Mary Ann anywhere.

This is where it gets even more interesting Potty.
When I found their Daughter Alice in 1891 at the address she married from she was under the name Hodgson & her marriage cert for 1891 said that James was dead. I found death in Newcastle for a James Middleton in 1876 age 35, which now also fits with Thomas' age in 1871.
I haven't been able to find Mary Ann & Alice in 1881.
In 1891 they are living in South Shields there are more children
Mary A born 1880 Newcastle &
Jane born 1886 South Shields.&
Elizabeth born 1887 South Shields.

Do you have Mary Ann and James in 1881? Is James's birthplace and YOB the same as the Thomas in 1874?

I can't find a marriage either.

Yep thats them Potty.

I just don't understand the Thomas/James bit. I can't find a marriage for a Mary Ann Scott to any Middleton. I've found her family in 1861 in the same street but I don't know what to do about searching for him.

While searching for my great grandparents I found that all the family was missing from 1891 census. I knew that they had married in 1891 so I ordered their marriage cert to find out their addresses.
I found my great grandmother I think at the address on the cert but under a different surname. Her father was deceased on marriage cert so I think she was transcribed under her stepfathers name.
Her father is named as James Middleton on her marriage cert which I had suspected as my grandfather was named after him. So back to the census' I went to search again. Still no sign of him.
Today I recieved her birth cert. Mothers name Mary Ann (Scott) & father James Middleton.
I can find no marriage for them.
I searched the address she was born at in 1872 & there in 1871 census is a Thomas Middleton 30 & Mary Ann Middleton 20.
Any ideas what to do to get furtherback?
