I use the Genealogist as well as Ancestry & like them both although of course it is personal preference. I paid around £65 for an annual sub to the Genealogist, but why not try their pay per view to see how you get on.
In th meantime if you want to pm me with any details you're looking for I'm quite happy to have a look for you, the BMD's go up to 2005

Re the "missing" ancestors ..... have you tried all possible mistranscriptions of their names?

Put their names up on here and see if someone can help you

best to access birth death and marriage records on www.freebmd.org.uk ..... currently covers July 1 1837 to approximately 1925/30, but is constantly being updated. It is free, as you probbaly know!

It will eventually carry all the records up to 1983.

Records after 1983 were automatically put on the computer, and can be accessed on ancestry.

You can also use the Complete Index on ancestry to find bmds between about 1925 and 1983 (ie the ones not yet transcribed onto freebmd). But it is an INDEX, so you get only name, quarter, year, and place of registration.

Don't know about The Genealogist .. someone else may have mroe advice for you

Has anyone used The Genealogist site to do searches? I seem to have exhausted Ancestry.com and need access to post 1901 and death records. Also hoping by widening my search I will finally sort out the puzzle as to where two ancestors disappeared to as they fell off the census, even though they were both alive. Wondering if The Genealogist site is worth a subscription. Hope someone can advise.
