Thanks to Huia down under and Lord of Kent for your advice. I'll try and see if I can sort out the free AVG version I have on my computer tomorrow.

Hi I have been using AVGFree v8 since just after it became available and only had a couple of problems the first couple of days. The free version can be had here http://free.avg.com/ww.homepage-appf8.

The forum for the free version is here http://freeforum.avg.com/ and please note the text of the Sticky:BEFORE INSTALLING AVG 8.0 FREE EDITION post. You must completely un-install previous versions before installing v8. Also just to be on the safe side after downloading and before un/installing, disconnect from the internet.

When I had the problem of not connecting to the update server, I went to the folder that v8 was installed to, found the file called avgupd.exe (you may have to change the folder display to show hidden to see it). When you find it just double-click on it and it will run the update program directly. That usually works ok and then the program should do it automatically from then on, if not do it again until it does. This is an approved way of fixing the problem.

From then on you can use the new free version with no time limit.

Hope this help all.

I also have the connection to the update manager failing each day, sometimes several times. I have to click on the icon and then update it. I did wonder if they are hoping I will get fed up and update to a paid version. I havent had any notice that the free version will not be available soon.
Huia.

I wasn't notified by AVG that the free version would no longer be available. Thanks Joanne for this information.

Thanks Peter, I've installed Antivir from Filehippo so I am hoping that will help keep my computer virus free.
Thanks very much for your help.

Hi Peter
Yes I had the problem you mentioned that happened last week with AVG timing out when trying to update. I gave up and tried it the next day and it was okay.

As the update have not been working for a couple of days I reinstalled AVG8.0.138 today hoping that it might help in some way. I clicked on AVG to update but it just gives the message "The connection with the update server has failed. So I don't know what is causing it.

If you are having problems with AVG, try Antivir, also free from File Hippo. I use both and they are happy to work side by side at the same time.

There was a similar problem reported last week. The connection to AVG kept timing out when trying to update. It was ok again after a few hours.

I have just tried it now and it has worked ok for me.

The File Hippo site was suggested for new installs because it seems more reliable when uploading and installing new software, rather than going direct to the supplier. Perhaps they have more powerful servers.

It won't help for AVG definition updates as you have to go direct to AVG for these.

Hi Angie M
The time and date on my computer are correct so I don't know what's causing the problem. I may have to consider using another product or paying for AVG.

Hi Staffordshire Col
Somebody on here recommended downloading AVG8 from filehippo.com/download_avg_antivirus which did work for me at first.

Hi
Thanks for your reply. There are no old versions of AVG on my computer, only AVG8 is showing so I don't know why AVG8 is not working for me unfortunately.

It's working fine for me. Have you checked to make sure all old versions are now off your computer?

I just wondered if anyone could help me concerning Free AVG8.
It has not been updating for a couple of days and just keeps saying "The connection with the update server has failed". I have re-installed it using Filehippo again to see if that would help. I re-installed the 8.0.138 version but now as well as the update problem it is saying Antivirus outdated and Anti-spyware outdated. Is the free AVG8 failing and would I be better paying for AVG. I was just wondering whether a computer expert on here could help me please.
