Thank you all for the advice given, very helpful.
I think as suggested.my best solution would be to check with the local registrars.

You are all so helpful when anyone asks for advice, it is much appeciated, once again thank you.

You could apply to the local (Leicester) office and ask them to supply the certificate, quote the name, age, district, year and quarter (the GRO reference means nothing to the local office so don't quote that).

In addition you should also ask that the certificate is only supplied if the details show she is the wife of xxx xxxx.

If the hubby you quote isn't noted on the cert then you wouldn't get the cert but you won't have to pay for the search either.

Even with the search and ref check against the name of the hubby the cert will only cost the £7

No cert= No charge when you use a local office.

If it's the city of Leicester, I think this is the right address:

The Register Office
Town Hall
Town Hall Square
Leicester
LE1 9BG

Tel: 0845 045 0901
Fax: 0116 2914676

Yes, I got a death certificate from Leicester register office, too - you can download application forms from the city council's website. I just filled out what I knew and two or three days later, they sent my great-aunty's death certificate.

Maybe you can do it by phone, too? Not sure if you can but I rang Ormskirk once - I had twin babies in my tree and I knew they both died as children but there were two possible registrations for each one. So I phoned up, gave my card details, they said they would check the correct ones (I gave parents names as additional checking points) and they only charged me £7 per certificate - no extras for having to check both possible dates for each.

Sometimes if you are lucky the local Register Office, Leicester, will check for certificates for you if you give details you know as a reference check, eg husbands name and they only charge for the one which is yours.

I know Manchester does this as they have done it for me. Hope this helps.

you could order a cert and specify her husbands name as a check point if its not correct you get a £4 refund ie you pay £3 for the search

a death cert then wont give you her maiden name if she was married she would be described as wife or widow of and her husbands name

Is ttere any way I can find out the the correct one, I have found two references in the death indexes for an ancestor, both of the same name and age, how can I find out which is the correct one without purchasing a certificate?
Being an OAP I am reluctant to purchase two certificates
Would a cemetery in the area, be able to give me a maiden name for the person to check?
The ancestor in question is Annie Grant age 92 Leicestor
one ref is vol 7a page 233 and the other 7a page 209
